Paranormal Activity

Even though Point of Ayr Lighthouse has not been staffed for more than a century it is home to many stories of ghostly apparitions. It is said the most common lighthouse ghost sighting is that of a keeper wearing a coat and cap who is seen in broad daylight standing in front of the glass dome on the gallery walkway.

History

Built in 1776, Point of Ayr Lighthouse was sadly discontinued in 1883 but is one of the oldest lighthouses in Wales protecting boats using Liverpool Bay. Standing on Talacre Beach at the entrance to the River Dee estuary the lighthouse once displayed two lights. The main beam, at 63 feet, shone seaward towards Llandudno and its second shone up the River Dee towards the hamlet of Dawpool in Cheshire. Originally painted in red and white stripes the lighthouse had a red lantern housing, which was replaced in 1844 with a metal pile lighthouse bearing a white light, put up by the order of the Corporation of Trinity House. This new structure however was replaced again in 1883 with a lightship. The lighthouse fell into dereliction until James McAllister, owner of nearby Talacre Beach Leisure Park, bought it at an auction in 1983.

The nosy ghost of Souter Lighthouse in Tyne and Wear is
lighthouse complex during the 1920s. Nowadays staff hear
banging doors and mysterious footsteps; objects are
occurrences seem more common at times when the peace of
Souter is disturbed by building work or improvements. But
staff insist they feel no sense of fear from the nosy

Castle Keep Newcastle upon Tyne

The castle stands on a steep sided promontory overlooking
the River Tyne. It is a readily defensible site which has
been occupied for nearly 2000 years. Flint flakes and a
stone axe head found in archaeological excavations hint at
prehistoric activity. From the mid 2nd century until the
beginning of the 5th century a Roman fort, Pons Aelius,
stood there, guarding the river crossing below. From the
8th century the site of the fort was used as a Christian
cemetery, presumably serving a settlement nearby. The first
castle, the New Castle upon Tyne, was founded in 1080 by
Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror. The
castle was rebuilt in stone during the reign of Henry II,
between 1168 and 1178. The castle was added to in the 13th
century, particularly during the reign of King John
(1207-1216) when an aisled hall was built and a barbican,
now known as the Black Gate, was added to the north gate in
the reign of Henry III between 1247 and 1250. After the
town wall was completed, about the mid 14th century, the
castle was isolated within the new defences and became
militarily redundant. In 1618 the castle was leased by
James I to one of his courtiers, Alexander Stephenson, who
allowed houses to be built within the castle walls. The
castle was briefly refortified at the time of the civil
war, and was the last stronghold of the Royalist defenders
of the town in the siege of 1644. Restoration of the
remaining castle walls and buildings began in the 19th
century and has continued to the present day.

Activity

People have been slapped by unseen hands, while the Museum
Room is said to be haunted by a man who looks like he’s
wearing a pack. In the Queen’s Chamber the apparition of a
woman has also been sensed here. In the Galleries,
footsteps have been heard pacing around while in the Great
Hall strange mists have been spotted and the sound of
hammering on the door has been heard. In the Garrison Room
it is said that lights follow people around the room, while
one person claimed there were three people standing in the
room. The sound of chanting has been recorded in the chapel
and the dragging of metal on stone has also been heard.

Empire Theatre Sunderland

History

The Sunderland Empire was founded on the 29th September
1906 by a Vesta Tilley and was the mastermind of two
contemporary heads of British theatre, Edward Moss and
Osward Stoll. It was a third man however, Richard Thornton,
who was famous for his partnership with the two as he came
from a poor background and reached great success by
climbing the theatrical ladder.

The Sunderland Empire has changed considerably since 1907.
Originally, the domed tower was surmounted with a revolving
sphere which bore the figure of “Terpischore” the Greek
Goddess of dance, not as is commonly thought, Vesta Tilley.
There were many main entrances to the theatre, each of
which had their own payboxes – little arched hatches in the
walls where you brought your ticket and then, having gone
through a tiny entrance in single file, you were able to
take your seats. Incidentally, these doors can still be
seen on the outside of the theatre. After the depression of
the twenties, a revival came to theatre during the late
1930′s. By the outbreak of war, theatre was back on its
feet with summer rep at the Sunderland Empire keeping the
place open even during its normally “dark” months. During
the war, a bomb exploded near the Sunderland Empire, badly
rocking it. As a safety precaution, the globe and the
statue of “Terpsichore” were removed. The original statue
can now be seen at the head of the main staircase. A
replica stands at the top of the spectacular dome.

However with the onset of movie theatres and television the
theatre suffered financial hardships and closed in the
fifties but re-opened under civic control in 1960. Since
its re-opening the theatre has changed from a cinema to a
function room and has been extensively redecorated and
refurbished and is now home to a dance studio and bar.

Activity

A carry on film legend is said to haunt this old theatre,
Sid James, who famously suffered a heart attack during a
performance on the opening night of The Mating Season on
the 26th April 1976 and died on the way to hospital. It is
said that his ghost now haunts the dressing room he used on
the night on his death. Les Dawson, during a gig at the
theatre, refused to play at the venue again after
experiencing ghostly activity. It is also said that Vesta
Tilley and Molly Moselle haunt the front of house areas.
Molly was once a stage manager for Ivor Novello’s The
Dancing Years in 1949 but upon leaving the theatre to
purchase a birthday card, she disappeared down a nearby
alley and was never seen again.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a short story by Washington Irving
contained in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent
and first published in 1819.

The story is set in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town near a
sequestered glen called Sleepy Hollow, around the year 1787.
It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a priggish schoolmaster
from Connecticut who is scared away from town by Abraham
“Brom Bones” van Brunt, his rival in love for the hand of
eighteen-year-old Katrina van Tassel. The legend featured in
the story is that of the Headless Horseman or Galloping Hessian
of the Hollow, the ghost of a Hessian trooper who lost his head
to a canon-ball during “some nameless battle” of the American
Revolutionary War and who “rides forth to the scene of battle
in nightly quest of his head.”

Hylton Castle ( Sunderland )
Craigavon Road
Hylton Castle Estate
Sunderland
SR5 3PA
Tyne and Wear

Originally built in 1072 the original wooden building was home
to the Hilton family until Sir William Hilton, sometime within
the end of the 14th Century and within the first ten years of
the 15th Century, built the present stone castle.

The castle is now owned and protected by the English Heritage.

This ancient castle is famous for its legend of the Cauld Lad
and there are at least three stories explaining the ghostly
apparition. One was that of a young retainer who was discovered
by the young heiress’s father courting his daughter and was
subsequently killed and now walks the castle. Local historians
however believe the ghostly apparition that haunts this castle
is explained from a story dating back to 1609. Lord of Hylton
had given orders that his horse be prepared by a certain time in
order that he could make an important journey. Angered by the delay
he visited the stable and found the stable boy asleep. The furious
Lord drew his sword and decapitated Roger Skelton, the boy in question.
To hide his crime he threw the corpse into a pond and put about a story
to cover up what he had done. When the remains were finally discovered
Lord Hylton was tried and acquitted of murder. The Coroner’s report
from the Chester Ward at Hylton on the 3rd July 1609 showed that a
witness supported Robert Hylton of Hylton, describing him as a gentleman,
saying; “when he swore that whilst using a scythe during mowing he
accidentally struck Roger Skelton with the point of the scythe on his
right thigh, causing a mortal wound one inch long and two inches broad
from which the youth died within the hour.” And thus Bishop William Jameson
granted a free pardon for manslaughter on the 6th of September 1609
and the legend of the Cauld Lad was founded.

The castle itself isn’t the only area that is haunted though.
The ghostly apparition is said to also appear as a boatman on the
Hylton Ferry, where he would accept fares but would leave passengers
stranded in the centre of the river and items are often rearranged and
displaced in the kitchen. Even today visitors have claimed to hear the
unearthly cries of the ghost. One such visitor reported this; “I heard loud
bangs coming from inside and I can’t think of any logical explanation for
that, it certainly wasn’t my imagination. Perhaps The Cauld Lad was trying
to give me a fright. I heard a voice say, “go” when I was in the woods”.

Jack ‘The Blaster’ Bates built this building around 1782 into the
limestone cliffs along Tyne and Wear’s coastline and has been
home to many tales of smuggling, suicides and deaths. The building
is now a refurbished pub and restaurant.

Paranormal Activity

With its chequered past it comes to no surprise that this old inn
is home to some unexplained occurrences ranging from strange
knocking noise to rattling sounds coming from the cellar when no-one
is there as if someone is locked inside.

Many staff have reported a chain that is used to keep customers
the right side of the bar, rattling and clanking when no-one is nearby
and strange hushed voices have also been heard when no-one is around.
Also a mysterious set of bare foot prints have also appeared on the wooden
floor which cannot be washed away and return every time they are cleaned.

A ghost of a man has also been reported by staff and visitors, often
appearing in the lower cave bar as well as numerous sightings
of strange dark shadows.

Paranormal investigations have reported power and electrical drainage
along with many unexplained lights and sounds recorded on digital equipment.
